Exploring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competition Styles and Strategies
For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioners looking to take their skills to the next level, competition offers an ideal environment to test and expand one’s abilities.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournaments are as much about discipline and professionalism as they are about skill and physical prowess. While fighters spend countless hours honing their techniques, improving their fitness, and strategizing for victory, there are some surprising ways a competitor can be disqualified—sometimes even before stepping into the cage.
At Ground Control Palm Beach, our coaches emphasize the importance of not only preparing physically and mentally for competition but also understanding the rules to avoid disqualifications that can tarnish a hard-earned reputation.
Here are three surprising ways MMA competitors can be disqualified and some tips on how to avoid them:
One of the most common ways a fighter can get disqualified is by failing to meet the weight requirement for their division. Weight classes are strictly enforced to ensure fairness and safety for all competitors. If a fighter shows up at weigh-ins even slightly over the limit, it can result in disqualification or forfeiture of the match.
This may seem like a straightforward rule, but the process of cutting weight can be tricky. Some fighters try to shed pounds too quickly using extreme measures, which can lead to fatigue, dehydration, or worse—missing weight entirely. At GCPB, we like to work with fighters to develop healthy, sustainable weight-cutting strategies so competitors feel strong, energized, and ready to perform on fight day. Fighters are also encouraged to know their natural weight limits and compete in divisions that align with their bodies’ capabilities.
Pro Tip: Start tracking weight and diet weeks ahead of the tournament, and don’t wait until the last minute to cut. Proper hydration and nutrition are key to a successful weigh-in. Your health matters and should be made a priority.
While most fighters are focused on their techniques and conditioning, it’s easy to overlook the strict requirements for gear and equipment. Gloves, mouthguards, shin guards, groin protectors, and other pieces of equipment must meet the standards set by the tournament organizers. Using the wrong type of gear—whether it’s gloves that are too heavy, a mouthguard that doesn’t fit regulations, or unapproved tape for hand wraps—can lead to disqualification.
Even seemingly minor infractions like forgetting to cut fingernails or not having clean gear can disqualify a fighter. Hygiene is taken seriously to prevent infections and injuries caused by cuts or scratches.
At GCPB, we remind trainees to double-check their equipment well before competition day. Coaches also ensure students are familiar with the specific requirements of the tournament they’re entering.
Pro Tip: Bring an extra set of all gear to the tournament to avoid any last-minute issues. And don’t forget to sanitize and clean your equipment thoroughly before the event!
MMA tournaments have strict rules about what is and isn’t allowed during a match, and even accidental use of illegal moves can result in disqualification. While it’s well-known that moves like eye-gouging, groin strikes, and headbutts are prohibited, there are less obvious illegal techniques that can catch fighters off guard. For instance, 12-6 elbows (striking directly downward with the elbow), small joint manipulation (bending or twisting fingers or toes), and strikes to the back of the head are all forbidden in most competitions.
Fighters who don’t fully understand the rule set of a specific tournament might unintentionally throw an illegal strike, resulting in an immediate loss or even suspension. At GCPB, we help our students prepare for competitions by reviewing rules specific to each organization, such as the Unified MMA Rules or IBJJF regulations for hybrid events. Training with partners in realistic sparring scenarios also helps fighters develop good habits and avoid risky techniques during live matches.
Pro Tip: Always attend the pre-fight rules meeting, and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification about any moves or scenarios you’re unsure of.
